A RARE AND IMPORTANT HANUKKAH LAMP. Altenburg, c. 1830 – 50. On a stylized triangular base that is supported by three ball shaped feet. The main structure in the shape of a winged eight headed hydra found in mythology. It is most likely based on Daniel’s vision of a monster symbolizing the various nations that would fall, one of them is obviously the Greeks. The body is chased with scales and dragon style designs. The maker CF above an S is known for his figural silver. 9.5” tall. This is one of a handful of examples of this lamp. A similar example is illustrated in Narkiss, The Hanukkah Lamp, Jerusalem, 1939 pl LXI, no. 174. Sold Sotheby’s, New York, March 1999, lot 317.
