A LETTER FROM JEFFERSON DAVIS TO MR C. F. LEE. Dated July 21, 1888 in Mississippi.Autographed Letter Signed (ALS). From Beauvoir, MississippiAddressing Mr. C.F. Lee, Jun, Mrs Davis, as was unusual towards the end of her husband’s life, writes in his name that : �Yours of the 18th Inst. has been received. The letter of Genl. R.E. Lee to which you refer was by some means abstracted from the letters preserved after the war, so far as I know, it was, among others, taken to New York (sic, for) greater security & when I saw it published inquiries and fruitless efforts were made to ascertain how the original was obtained. The letter has not been recovered and I therefore cannot comply with your request. Denying a request by Mr. Lee. Also included is a two page letterpress copy of C.F.Lee’s letter to Davis requesting the Lee letter. .
