East Germany, 18th century. Chased with two Temple pillars, each in grapevine motif, three crowns representing the crown of Torah, the crown of Kehuna, and the crown of a Good Name (Avos 4:13) and two lions, one of which has a human face which appears to be sad (it is a Chevrah Kadischa breast plate). Further decorated with C-scrolls and swirling designs. Central cartouche engraved with dedication: THIS BELONGS TO THE LEADERS OF THE BURIAL SOCIETY; with the preparation and burial of the deceased the leaders are busy with. The Gabbis, the ritual supervisors, the body washers, in the year 1740(?) (the year of the speedy coming (of the Messiah), according to the minor calendar. Apparently with Zagayski inventory mark J171.
