A RARE AND IMPORTANT CHINESE (SHANGHAI) MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE OF TWO JEWISH REFUGEES FROM GERMANY. September, 1945. Magnificently decorated with pairs of birds of different breeds and other Chinese decorations. This certificate documents the wedding of Friedrich and Cilly (Cecelia) Mayerfeld on September 22, 1945. In large words on the top is declared “CERTIFICATE OF MARRIAGE". The text translates to: This certifies that Friedrich, a male, who was born 9/24/1891 in Germany and Cecilia, a female born on December 18, 1888, in Germany were united in marriage on September 22, 1945, at Taishiquilai, no. 14, 315 Nong, Huishan Road, Shanghai, China at 5:30pm (where the wedding took place). Two families united in marriage, forming a covenant in the same ha;l;. A good marriage is forever bound, and the match is truly fitting. Looking at the peach blossoms in full bloom today, it is an auspicious time for marriage. It is predicted that the year to come, the descendants will be as numerous as the melons and wine. Alfred Lackenbacher was born in Baden, Germany but lived in Vienna before escaping to Shanghai. China welcomed Jewish refugees at a time where most countries refused to. Approximately 20,000 Jews were able to escape to Shanghai Many came without any finances and were helped by the local Jewish community and the Joint Distribution Committee. Only three others are known to exist.Friedrich and Cecilia Mayerfeld, who are documented as refugees on the list of refugees in Shanghai, registered through the HIAS SHANGHAI and can be found in the Arolson archives.
