Safed, c. 1897. Tablet form. Chased with two lions flanking the decalogue and a spinning wheel indicating the appropriate usage. . The inscription reads: "This was dedicated by Sose Leah bat Simeon Mevad (?) to the synagogue of the Grand Rabbi of Radowce – may his days be long and good, amen – in the Holy City of Safed – may it be rebuilt speedily, in our days – in the year [5]657 [1897]." Rabbi Alter Joseph Hager of Radowce (ca. 1820-1879), scion of an important line of Hasidic rabbis, settled in Safed in 1873. His son Moses (d. 1901) followed him to Safed, arriving in 1897. It is to his synagogue that this Torah shield was dedicated. 9.7” tall. Estimate $18,000 – 20,000
