AN IMPORTANT CHEVRA KADISHA/GEMILUTH CHASSIDIM PRESENTATION GOBLET. Germany (Saxony), early 19th century. Probably by Anton August Bohme. On a square base with a decorated and engraved shaft. The structure and style of the cup is that of a very large goblet. engraved throughout with members’ names and other scriptural engravings as well as indicating that it originated as a gift from a Gemiluth Chassidim or Chevrah Kadischa (Burial Society). The exact location is not mentioned, however it is engraved with “Court Dentist Hirschfeld ” as deputy treasurer of the group. This could possibly refer to Friedrich Hirschfeld (1753 – 1820) who was a court dentist in Weimar, Oldenburg and for the Duke of Anhalt-Bernburg. It is also inscribed that the annual meetings would be on the 15th of Kislev. Apparently the names of the new members were added upon their entry into the fraternity. Similar goblets can be found in the Jewish museums of Frankfurt and Worms. 10.8" tall and 596 grams.
