New York, c. 1958. AN AMERICAN SILVER MEZUZAH, ILYA SCHOR, NEW YORK, CIRCA 1960. The door is engraved with scenes from the story of Ruth. The first shows Ruth in the field gleaning wheat, the second features Ruth and Boaz and the lower one shows Ruth and Naomi embracing. There is a Hebrew inscription from the Book of Ruth “Keep your eyes on the field they are reaping and follows them" (Ruth 2, verse 9), as well as the name of G-d, and "Blessed are you in the field", (Deuteronomy 28, verse 3). The periphery is surrounded by a pierced border of cartouches engraved with the Signs of the Zodiac. Further decorated with lattice work cresting of birds flanking the Shin (G-d). The base has open scrollwork and is fitted with three hanging pendants. FItted in the inside compartment is a vellum scroll painted with colors and gold leaf by Schor showing Ruth gleaning wheat and inscription “BLESSED ART THOU IN THE FIELD”. Engraved by Schor on the back with his signature in English and Hebrew. 7.9” long. Estimate $30,000 – 40,000
