AN EXTREMELY RARE UNDERPLATE GIVEN BY THE WIFE OF RABBI LEOPOLD (JUDAH LEIB) LOW. Pest, 1877. Made completely of coins soldered to each other. It is engraved THIS WAS GIVEN BY THE RABBANIT MRS CHAYA, WIFE OF THE PILLAR, OUR RABBI THE RABBI YEHUDA SON OF RABBI MOSES LOW OF BLESSED MEMORY ON THE DAY OF THE WEDDING OF HER DAUGHTER PESSEL IN SIVAN 1877. Rabbi Leopold Low was considered the most important figure in Hungarian Neolog Jewish history. A descendant of the Maharal of Prague. After his studies, he became the Rabbi of Nagykanizsa in 1841. He was the leader at the time of Hungarian liberal Judaism introducing sermons in Hungarian.4.5” wide.
