A VERY RARE HAND ENGRAVED SHOFAR BELONGING TO RABBI LEWIS BROWNE (1897 – 1949). American, c. 1925. Traditional form. Engraved: RABBI LEWIS BROWNE TEMPLE ISRAEL AT WATERBURY. 11.2” long. Rabbi Lewis Browne was a noted rabbi, writer, lecturer and world traveler. Rabbi Browne was also the author of This Believing World (1926), The Graphic Bible (1928) with illustrations by Mark Rothko, See What I Mean? (1943) and The Wisdom of Israel (1945). Browne was considered one of the foremost authorities on the problems of comparative religion.
