A LARGE AND RARE SILVER SHMIROTH KIDDUSH CUP. Poland or Ukraine, 1871. Engraved with a unicorn and a fire breathing stag flanking an oval cartouche engraved in Hebrew: “THIS IS THE SILVER FROM TZADIKIM (HOLY RIGHTEOUS PEOPLE) IN THE YEAR 1871. Additionally decorated with an eagle with spread wings. Often when the rabbinical leader of a community (the Rebbe) has a favorite follower or student, he would give him some of his silver coins or silver eating utensils The recipient would take these coins or utensils to a silversmith to make them into a cup or if he was given a significant gift, a menorah. Marked 12. 3” tall. A cup of this size is quite rare.
