AN EXTREMELY RARE PAIR OF SILVER TORAH FINIALS BY CARL BITZEL. Augsburg, 1795/97. Two tiered. The lower part decorated with leaf tips, flowers and discs. Surmounted with open work, and two pierced balconies. Topped by lion finials, each holding an encased wreath. Engraved on each stave in Hebrew: with later presentation inscription to the Den Helder Synagogue in commemoration of its 80th anniversary from Yant, daughter of Yehuda Beek, in memory of her husband, Eliezer Shlomo Kannewasser and dated 1917. Formerly owned by the Jewish Community of Amsterdam. Sold in Sotheby’s; December 2006. 16.5″ tall.
